Synopsis
|
In 2046, set in the mid to late 1960's, Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) moves back to Hong Kong after his divorce to his
unfaithful wife and his break-up with Mrs. Su (Maggie Cheung). The refined noble man of In the Mood for Love has
changed: He now freelances in writing pornography, drinks heavily, has a string of women for one-night stands and seeks the
service of prostitutes. He gradually crafts a science-fiction novel about the future named after his room number, 2046, with
characters based on the hotel manager, his daughter (Faye Wong) and her former fiance, Japanese man (Takuya Kimura). One
narrative strand follows his tempestuous affair with a beautiful, bad-tempered call girl, Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi). Another goes
back in time to a tragic, mysterious woman (Gong Li) from a casino in Singapore. More, though, than a story about one man's
romantic entanglements with different women, 2046 is about a gorgeously sustained mood of elegy and melancholy, where
experiences evoke memories, and the present is always colored by echoes of the past.
