Synopsis

In 2046, set in the mid to late 1960's, Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) moves back to Hong Kong after his divorce to his unfaithful wife and his break-up with Mrs. Su (Maggie Cheung). The refined noble man of In the Mood for Love has changed: He now freelances in writing pornography, drinks heavily, has a string of women for one-night stands and seeks the service of prostitutes. He gradually crafts a science-fiction novel about the future named after his room number, 2046, with characters based on the hotel manager, his daughter (Faye Wong) and her former fiance, Japanese man (Takuya Kimura). One narrative strand follows his tempestuous affair with a beautiful, bad-tempered call girl, Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi). Another goes back in time to a tragic, mysterious woman (Gong Li) from a casino in Singapore. More, though, than a story about one man's romantic entanglements with different women, 2046 is about a gorgeously sustained mood of elegy and melancholy, where experiences evoke memories, and the present is always colored by echoes of the past.

2046 Screened By Wong Kar-wai At Walter Reade Theater
    June 18, 2005

    2046

2046 — director Wong Kar-wai's long-awaited sequel of sorts to his 2000 art-house hit In the Mood for Love, starring Tony Leung, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung, Chang Chen, Gong Li, Carina Lau, Takuya Kimura, Faye Wong and Dong Jie — received a special screening Wednesday night at Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center, as part of the 'Film Comment Select' series of undistributed films chosen for presentation each year by the editors of the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Film Comment magazine.

In attendance at the special viewing of 2046 was the elusive director Wong Kar-wai to introduce the film and to answer questions following the sold out screening. Wearing trademark sunglasses, Wong signed autographs and posed for photos.
