Well when I bought my own copy I realized it didn't have any English subtitles. Luckily I had someone send me the translation and it made more sense than when I first watched it all in Mandarin audio.
As you know, 2046 is directed by Wong Kar-Wai and stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Zhang Ziyi, Faye Wong, Carina Lau Kar-Ling, Takuya Kimura, Gong Li, Dong Jie, Chang Chen and a short but special appearance by Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk.
The story takes place in the 60's and in a hotel room also named 2046. Whoever stayed in room 2046 would not change but would feel different after they had left. A writer named Chow Mo-Wan (Tony) has various encounters (especially the *wink wink* kind) and meets several different women: The daughter of the hotel manager, Wang Jing-Wen (Faye Wong), the younger daughter, Wang Jie-Wen (Dong Jie), a callgirl named Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi), a showgirl named Lulu (Carina Lau), and a mysterious woman of the same name (referring to In The Mood For Love) Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li). All of them are affected by 2046. Chow also writes a futuristic story taken place in the year 2046 about a man named Tak (Takuya Kimura), who falls in love with an android (Faye Wong).
I thought 2046 was very good. I loved the cinematography, the acting, and the storyline. It may seem complex when you first think about it. But if you watch it maybe once or twice you'll probably understand the movie as a whole. Of course, I LOVED Zhang Ziyi's character Bai Ling, but I felt sorry for her. She acts playful, also in a sexy way.
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai was great too. I thought he was a total player!
Gong Li was also great. Her presence in the film makes it all worth watching this movie. At least Chang Chen made some kind of appearance playing Lulu's jealous boyfriend.
If you haven't seen In The Mood For Love then it might not make complete sense. However, I haven't seen it, but I enjoyed 2046 and understood the feelings of all the characters. I almost cried at some parts.
I should warn you though, you might feel sad after watching this movie. But then again, you'll be happy that you've seen it.
