Shi Mian Mai Fu Will Have No Cast Change
    January 02, 2004

Following the recent, sudden death of Anita Mui, Shi Mian Mai Fu ("No Way Out" - aka House of Flying Daggers) director Zhang Yimou was initially quoted as stating that the Hong Kong Canto-pop diva would be replaced. Rumored candidates that have circulated include Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung.

Yesterday, in an interview with Beijing Youth Daily, Shi Mian Mai Fu producer Zhang Weiping said that, after some very careful consideration, Zhang Yimou decided to alter the script instead of casting another actress in Anita's place. In addition, as a further sign of respect, tribute would be payed to Anita by crediting her in the film.

Shi Mian Mai Fu Reaction To Anita Mui's Passing
    January 01, 2004

The day after Anita Mui died, due to complications brought on by cervical cancer, filming of what was to be her last film, Shi Mian Mai Fu ("No Way Out" - aka House of Flying Daggers), continued as scheduled in Yongchuan, near Chongqing, China. In honor and respect for Anita, director Zhang Yimou and co-stars Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhang Ziyi joined the crew in a moment of silence before beginning their work for the day.

Co-star Andy Lau, in Hong Kong at the time of his very close friend's death, did not speak to members of the media. He did, however, release the following written statement: "Ah Mui has not really left us. She has only changed her state of being. She lives now in each of our hearts. Friendship was always very important to her. Surely, she would not want her friends to mourn her loss. Anita Mui Yim-fong spent her whole life giving all the love she had to those around her. She hoped that everyone would 'treasure the people in their lives'. Don't let her down. Let her go happily on her way. When you think of her, she will appear immediately in your memory and say hello."

Zhang Yimou told reporters that Shi Mian Mai Fu is 80% complete and that he had been waiting to film Anita Mui's scenes because she never formally turned down her role, that of a wandering warrior. Now that she has passed, Zhang is scrambling to find someone to replace her. Zhang Yimou: "I've been waiting all along for Ah Mui to take her place on the set. I have never thought of replacing her because she is the best choice. Alas, she has departed."
