She's not only interested in every article about her, but also any comments made by online user after their reading the news. (Indeed, there are praises and criticizes, and even over-reacted sentences), but from her opinion, she can always learn something from those comments by online users. Hero Post-production and Second Planned Zhang Yimou Wuxia
July 13, 2002

According to reports from various sources, Zhang Yimou has just finished a rough cut of Hero, which is about two hours long. Nanfang Daily reports many people who've reviewed the rough cut have praised what they've seen and have said that Hero was a new height of Zhang Yimou's career. Someone from Beijing based New Picture, one of the production companies of the film, told New Daily (a Tianjin Daily affiliate) that as a martial art movie, Hero had two major breakthroughs. The first breakthrough is the story is no longer just about revenge, but more about course of history and fate of nations; and the second breakthrough is that the movie is made with pure aestheticism, which is very close to the true spirit of wuxia.

Post-production is planned to be completed by September or October of this year and Zhang Yimou will make the final cut himself. Hero may be shown at the oldest film festival in the world, the 59th Venice International Film Festival, which will be held from August 28 to September 7, but it will not compete for any award because of time constraints. No word yet on whether or not Hero will make it to this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which will be held from September 5 to 14. Since the beginning, Hong Kong's Elite Films, which financed the film, has already had an eye on the Oscar.

According to New Picture, another Zhang Yimou wuxia is indeed in the planning. It will not be a Hero sequel, but rather another story about heroes in ancient times.

Copyright Dispute Over CTHD Novels Settled
July 11, 2002

A dispute over the copyright of the novel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, whose film adaptation in 2000 became China's first Oscar-winner film, has been settled, the China Reading Weekly recently reported.

The verdict requires the defendant, Hubei People's Publishing House, which was sued for publishing novels obviously plagiarizing Chinese novelist Wang Dulu's work Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to pay 100,000 yuan in compensation to Wang's family and to provide a written apology.

The tiger-dragon novel was originally written by Wang Dulu in the 1940s and was published in China's mainland and Hong Kong. After the Oscar-winner film based on the book became popular throughout the Chinese-speaking world, the novels of Wang, who died years ago, again became best-sellers.

Hubei Publishing House in August 2000 published a series of four books by Nie Yulan which plagiarized Wang's novels in setting, plot and characters. The publishers also attempted to mislead readers into believing that the Oscar-winner film was based on Nie's novels.

Wang's family began litigation against the publishing house in April 2001 after their attempts to stop publication of the plagiarized version failed.

Beijing Haidian District People's Court ruled on September 17, 2001 that the publishing house compensate Wang's family and stop all tortious activities.

The publishing house and Wang's family reached an agreement concerning specific compensation and the terms of apology.

The publishing house suggested that Nie Yunlan, writer of the false versions who published the novels in two Chinese literature periodicals before they were published by Hubei People's Publishing House, also be accused of plagiarism.

Ziyi Co-star Injured On Purple Butterfly Set
July 09, 2002

Zhang Ziyi's Purple Butterfly co-star, Li Bingbing, was injured two days ago on the set.  According to Times Business and Chengdu Business News, after falling from a car during filming, one of the car's wheels ran over Li Bingbing's left foot. Zhang Ziyi reportedly jumped immediately off the car to offer assistance. Shooting was halted while crewmembers looked for ice for her wound.  Zhang Ziyi even suggested buying stick ice cream instead.

Director Lou Ye wanted to send Bingbing to the hospital but she refused. Earlier, while filming a running scene with Zhang Ziyi, an extra accidentally stepped on her right foot, clipping off one third of the nail from her big toe. After finishing a few more shots, she went back to Shanghai directly because she was about to continue working on another production the next day. Fortunately, bones in her left leg are not considered to be broken, though more examinations are expected.

Spy Photos Taken From Purple Butterfly's Nanjing Set
July 08, 2002

Zhang Ziyi (right)
on the platform

The three pictures in this news update were secretly taken by Jin Jin from Nanjing Morning News at Nanjing North Train Station, which doubled as the old Shanghai Train Station.

Reportedly, director Lou Ye picked this one hundred plus year old and soon to be decommissioned train station because it looked very old and not because he wanted to save money. In fact, lots of money was spent on leasing the station, building the over-line bridge and fences and hiring 1,400 extras. The production will move back to Shanghai tomorrow.

Two more photos from the Purple Butterfly set.  The first is of Nanjing North (Pukou) Train Station, which was used to double as the old Shanghai Train Station. The over-line bridge was built specifically for the movie. For some reason, the crew did not remove the plate with "Nanjing North Train Station" written on it. The second is presumably of one British and two Sikh policemen:   1  |  2 .

Hero Post-production Nearly Complete
July 08, 2002

Someone working very closely with director Zhang Yimou reported on the condition of anonymity that the post-production of Hero would soon be wrapped up. He said editing was completed last month in Australia and dubbing, as well as sound mixing, will end in two months. This means Hero will have enough time to show up at this year's Toronto International Film Festival in September, if there is indeed such a plan. Two years ago, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had its North American debut at the festival.

He also said that under lobbying from his investor, Zhang Yimou's next project would be another martial arts film. About ten days ago, several people from the art department went to Xinjiang in the northeast region of China to scout locations. Shooting of this untitled movie will start in the coming winter or next spring.

Purple Butterfly Shooting in Nanjing
July 08, 2002

A large scene was shot at Pukou Train Station northeast of Shanghai in the old capital of China, Nanjing. Hundred of extras including 19 foreigners were hired for the scene. The train station, with a temporary over-line bridge built by the crew, was used to double as the old Shanghai train station. Zhang Ziyi's hair was curled for the shoot and she was wearing a dark brown plastic coat.

According to Nanjing based Jinling Evening News, Ding Hui, played by Zhang Ziyi, goes to the train station to pick up a killer.  But, due some confusion, she accidentally kills a girl played by Li Bingbing, who was there to meet her boyfriend Sima, played by Liu Ye. An unidentified crewmember told Chengdu Business News it was much cheaper to shoot the scene in Nanjing than to do it in Shanghai. Shooting in Nanjing is expected to wrap up today.

July 05, 2002

Mun Sang Poh reports Hsu Feng has announced in Shanghai that she will indeed produce a remake of her martial arts classic Hsia Nu (Xia Nu, literally "Female Knight-Errant" / a.k.a. "A Touch of Zen"), and the only candidate for the lead role of -- which Hsu Feng played in the original 1969 film -- is no other than Zhang Ziyi.

Zhang Ziyi has reportedly expressed her respect to the original film while on her way to a new location of Purple Butterfly in Nanjing. She said the movie was a classic and the martial arts shown in it was very special -- a kind of "jumping" style. Hsu Feng is currently expecting to meet Zhang Ziyi for the first time and her partner Li Bihua is currently working on the script.
