Zhang Ziyi Invited To Join Oscar Academy
June 27, 2005

 Zhang Ziyi
|
Zhang Ziyi, along with 111 other film stars and professionals within the industry, has been invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
to join its membership. Though official induction won't be for another three months in September, Ziyi has acknowledged the
the invitation, which means she will be able to vote as an Academy member for next year's Oscars.
In response to the news, Ziyi was quite modest. "I am very pleased to hear the news. Audience members both from China and
all over the world provided me with strong support in the past several years, which helped me make progress," Ziyi said,
adding the invitation was simply an honor rather than a change.
Candidates for Academy membership are normally proposed by members and then considered by committees made up of prominent
representatives of each of the organization’s fourteen branches — art directors, executives, film editors, etc. In
addition, individuals nominated for Academy Awards, if not already members of the organization, are automatically
considered by the appropriate committees, though not necessarily invited to join.
While the great majority of Academy members are based in the US, membership is open to qualified film industry professionals
from around the world. The current Academy membership roster of 5,780 jurists has members from 36 countries, including China:
Shanghai-born actress and director
Joan Chen (Jasmine Women);
Beijing-born actress
Lu Yan and director
Chen Kaige; and renown cinematographer and emerging director
Gu Changwei from Xian.
Zhang Ziyi will be welcomed into the organization at an invitation-only reception and induction ceremony to be held at the
Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study
in Beverly Hills, California, on Wednesday, September 21, 2005.

It was tiring!"
