Crouching Tiger PS2 Game Due In August
March 26, 2003
|

|
UBI Soft has recently announced that their
game, designed for the Sony Playstation 2, would be ready by August of this year to be shipped to consumers.
Developed by Genki (Bushido Blade)
for the PS2 under license from
Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Crouching Tiger is a martial arts fighting
game based on the classic teachings and techniques of the Wudan style and promises intense and
realistic combat action, coupled with unique gravity-defying display techniques, and stunning
visuals.
The playable characters of the PS2 game - Mu Bai, Jen, Shu Lien and Lo - all show their mastery of
sword fighting within a graceful combat system, seeking revenge on Jade Fox, each through their
own unique storylines. The game offers it's user(s) the opportunity to kick ass across bars,
waterfalls, city streets, and the bamboo forest seen in the movie. All the moves are as seen in the
original film, too, meaning that a blackflip off a balcony ending with a 20-foot-high jump-kick
on a rooftop enemy will be a simple matter of pressing a few buttons. The movie's atmosphere's
all here, too, right down to the Mandarin dialogue with English subtitles.
Ubi's Tony Kee: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the most innovative and exciting
movies in years, and we've dedicated ourselves to capturing the incredible look and feel that
made the film such an amazing hit. With compelling characters, action-packed fighting sequences
and stunning environments, the game will feature the martial arts magic of this classic film."

for the XBOX, GameCube Advanced (being developed by UBI Soft in

Hero Misses Oscar Win
March 24, 2003
|
Last night, the 75th Annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences ceremony (the "Oscars") was held at
Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
Zhang Yimou's
Chinese epic Hero, China's highest-grossing
domestic film ever, nominated for Best Foreign Film, lost the award to German filmmaker Caroline Link's
Nowhere in Africa, the story of a German Jewish
family forced to stay in Africa due to events brought on by World War II.
Zhang Ziyi was expected to arrive in Southern California on the 22nd in preparation for the
awards ceremony. But, much of the film's cast and crew, including Ziyi, opted out of attending presumably in
protest to the United States' preemptive invasion of Iraq. Ziyi in a recent interview with Beijing Youth Daily:
"With war comes bloodshed and death. How can one go to an awards ceremony in a fancy evening gown and smile?"
The only representative of the film in attendance was director Zhang Yimou, who commented before the ceremony
that he believed such a martial arts epic as Hero is relevant during wartime. "Hero
is a film calling for peace, and at this moment in time, peace is even more important," Zhang said confidently.
About Hero's chances of winning the Best Foreign Film award, domestic film critics speculated
beforehand that its chances were slim. Judging from past experience, the Oscars historically does
not favor epics in the foreign language film category, but rather heartwarming tear-jerkers.
Ziyi will now most likely continue shootingdirector Hou Yong's
Jasmines Blooming, currently under production in Shanghai.

Pictures From Ziyi's Ferragamo Visit
March 10, 2003
|
As was recently reported, while in Europe last month for the International Berlin Film Festival
and to promote Zhang Yimou's Chinese epic
Hero, Zhang Ziyi stopped at the Florence,
Italy headquarters of Ferragamo Shoes. The following images are from that visit.
The first is of Ziyi getting her feet measured for a pair of custom made shoes. The second shows Ziyi and a shoe mold. The third is of Ziyi with teddy, presumably a gift from Ferragamo. And the last is of Ziyi with Ferragamo president, Wanda Ferragamo:
After trying on several dozen pairs of shoes, Ziyi finally settled for a black pair, which she was very pleased with.

Ziyi Visits Ferragamo Shoes
March 07, 2003
|
While in Europe last month for the International Berlin Film Festival
and to promote Zhang Yimou's Chinese epic
Hero, Zhang Ziyi stopped at the Florence,
Italy headquarters of Ferragamo Shoes, the famous
shoe brand started by Salvatore Ferragamo, billed as the "Shoemaker to the Stars."
The company makes shoes customized made for celebrities. Among its clientele have been
Audrey Hepburn,
Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and
Madonna. Ziyi is supposed to be the first
Asian star to get a custom fitting.
Company president Wanda Ferragamo was very excited to see Ziyi. In her eyes, Ziyi reminded her
of Audrey Hepburn, who came in to see them at barely over the age of 20. She feels that they
both have the same star quality. Also, Ziyi seems to be very pleased with this brand of shoes...
naturally.

Zhang Ziyi and Joan Chen In World Journal
March 02, 2003
|
World Journal 《世界日报》, the largest
Chinese newspaper in North America, very recently (02/28/03) did a feature on Zhang Ziyi and
Joan Chen and their starring roles in
director Hou Yong's next project, Jasmine's Blooming,
a period piece set in 1930's, 50's and 80's Shanghai.
From the feature it's learned that the movie ends in the 1980's, rather than the 70's, and that Ziyi
will play three roles: Xian during the 1930's, Zhi during the 1950's and Xiao towards the
film's conclusion in the 1980's. All three of her onscreen characters will be approximately 18 years of age. Joan
Chen is expected to play the older Xian role from the 1950's on, first as Zhi's mother and during the 1980's
as Xiao's grandmother.
Ziyi from the feature: "[playing 3 roles] will be a big challenge."
In addition, actor Jiang Wen will play Ziyi's
love interest in the film. Joan Chen is supposedly in Shanghai, where the film is expected to soon
start production.
