2046 Shooting Officially Begins Today
November 18, 2002

Zhang Ziyi is currently in Guangzhou filming Wong Kar-wai's futuristic film 2046, which officially begins shooting today. Ziyi's very excited about the production, and she is very glad to be working, considering acting is her favorite thing to do.

She still does not have a script and little idea of what or who her character is. In response to Wong Kar-wai's highly improvisational style, she does not feel concerned. At the same time, she may use her time to improve on her English. At the moment, she is not feeling confident enough to take on any Hollywood projects that require an English speaking role.

    Ziyi Talks About Hero
    November 7, 2002

The following excerpt is a continuation of a very recent interview by Ziyi with Beijing Times as she talks more about Hero and her role in the highly anticipated film:

Interviewer: You've said that you didn't get many scenes in Hero and hoped for less media coverage for yourself. Is there anything unforgettable to you personally?

Ziyi: It's [true] I only played a supporting role. Since the day shooting began, I've always tried to participate in this movie as a student or an audience member. There are many unforgettable moments. If [you are asking for] anything special, it is probably the maple forest fist scene with Maggie Cheung. We were all hanging in the air. While making the shot, I dived onto (her). I felt my eye almost burst out off their sockets. I was holding the twin sabers. They're very heavy.

Interviewer: Many are not expecting Hero to get anything from the Oscars and say that the music is too similar to that of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Do you have any predictions?

Ziyi: [They're] saying they are too similar because they don't understand Hero. I think there is no violence in it and it's a passionate film which can warm your heart and inspire your soul, and is about a nation's cohesion. The American audiences, having been through the "9-11," will like it.

As an accompaniment to this news update, at left are two recently released pictures of Zhang Ziyi from the Hero set. The first is of Moon (Ziyi) riding on horseback in the desert. The second is of Moon and her master, Broken Sword (Tony Leung), in the library (*).

    * note: What appear to be logs [behind Ziyi and Tony Leung in the second picture] are actually among the book scrolls (made of bamboo strips) which make up the library. Labels show the names of two books: Chun Qiu (bottom) and Zuo Zhuan (top). Chun Qiu ("Spring and Autumn"), written by Confucius, is a book about Chinese history from 722 to 481 BC. This period was later renamed the Spring and Autumn Period by historians. Zuo Zhuan is another history written partially based on Chun Qiu. -- MonkeyPeaches

    Ziyi Talks About 2046
    November 7, 2002

The following excerpt is a continuation of a very recent interview by Ziyi with Beijing Times as she talks more about 2046 and director Wong Kar-wai's filmmaking style:

Interviewer: Are you going to start working on 2046 this month?

Ziyi: Yes. Even my mom could be tired of it if it was delayed any further. If I remembered correctly, Wong Kar-wai said he had been working on the film for almost three years. It's probably a new record for the longest pre-production for a film. Design of my character has been finalized and it has been announced [it will be screened] at the Cannes Film Festival, but there is just no word on when the shooting will begin.

Interviewer: Do you know the plot line of 2046?

Ziyi: I haven't read any final outline, but based on several conversations with Wong Kar-wai, I think 2046 is actually the sequel of In The Mood For Love. 2046 is actually the number of the room Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung met. After Maggie Cheung left, Tony leung stays in the room alone and has many recollections and imagines maybe about the past or the future. Later Maggie Cheung returns to room 2046. I think this is probably the plot of 2046. Maybe only this kind of structure can include more and more actors being mentioned by the media. It's Wang Kar-wai's improvisation.

    Ziyi Talks About Purple Butterfly
    November 7, 2002

In a very recent interview with Beijing Times, Zhang Ziyi talks about Purple Butterfly and it's director, Lou Ye. The following is an excerpt from that interview:

Interviewer: Is Purple Butterfly a pure drama?

Ziyi: I don't know. We must judge a film after it's completed, especially a film made by such young director like Lou Ye. Purple Butterfly has a very legendary main storyline but it's up to Lou Ye [for it] to be a drama or a very stylized film. I don't know his intension. Young directors are often unpredictable and this is the main reason I chose Purple Butterfly.

Interviewer: Will this film be shown at next year's Cannes Film Festival?

Ziyi: Yes, basically. I hope Purple Butterfly can be as successful as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon [at Cannes].

Interviewer: How do you judge director Lou Ye?

Ziyi: All Chinese directors I want to work with are talented, including Lou Ye. When I decided to take Purple Butterfly, I received some big support from director Zhang Yimou. He said there were many I can learn from in this generation of directors, like Lou Ye.
