2046 Starts Shooting Very Soon
October 31, 2002
|
From a very recent interview given to Beijing Youth,
Zhang Ziyi talks about Wong Kar-wai's
on again, off again futuristic film, 2046, and suggests that production will soon get underway:
Reporter: Besides Purple Butterfly, do you have any other project?
Zhang Ziyi: Shooting of 2046 will start soon. Wong Kar-wai has asked me to check in on
November 17th. There is no script and I know nothing about my role. Based on the test shot I
did earlier this year (picture)
, [I think] it' probably a strange futuristic character. My hair was made
very tall and I was walking the wire with high-heel shoes. 2046 is a big mystery to me. I feel
curious and expected.

Eight Questions With Zhang Ziyi
October 31, 2002

Ziyi as Like Moon |
As reported in Sina.com, Zhang Ziyi recently gave an interview
to Beijing Youth about Hero. In the interview linked below, Ziyi talks about the movie's characters, significant elements, cast and director.
Eight Questions With Zhang Ziyi:
Reporter: From your perspective, what kind of movie is Hero?
Ziyi: The core of the movie is that of heroic spirit. The message of Hero is not to be concerned with oneself, but rather to be concerned with others. Specifically, it is the country and the people's highs and lows that make up this responsibility. This is what drives the characters in this drama.
In fact, Hero consists of three parts: two parts of the story is fiction, while one part is based on truth. The colors also play a distinguishing element in the movie, so the makeup of the story is a bit complicated. When watching Hero, one can see that there is an internal aspect, as well as lots of action and fighting. Fortunately, all of this looks good on screen.
Hero awakens the wuxia ("chivalrous") spirit in people, as well as heroism -- [it is] these types of noble attributes that are of a universal nature.

Ziyi At Beijing Tag Heuer Opening
October 29, 2002
|
On the afternoon of October 25th, as their official spokesperson, Zhang Ziyi appeared in
Beijing at the ribbon cutting grand opening ceremony of the first
Tag Heuer retail outlet in China. Along with two photos of Ziyi at this Tag Heuer function (left) is the following short interview:
Question: Considering that you're an Asian actress chosen to represent the world-class brand Tag Hauer, do you think that
this is because China is getting more accepted by the world, or that the world pays more attention to China?
Ziyi: There are two sides to this question. On one hand, as China blends into the world, we are gaining excellent experience,
and becoming more familiar with international conventions. On the other hand, China's own international status is also
getting much higher -- I feel that this event, the opening of the Tag Hauer Watch store in
Wang Fu Jing is the best proof of that. As the Tag Hauer spokesperson, I think that besides the international
appeal of China's stars, on a certain level -- it is China's vast market, and perhaps Tag Hauer's heavy interest and emphasis
in this market that is quite important [in this regard].
Question: You consider Chinese television/film and entertainers as being more internationally recognized nowadays -- what is
the most important thing to pay attention to?
Ziyi: Concerning this issue, I feel that in addition to relying on one's established ability as well as having more
opportunities to be specially treated, a person's unique charisma and personality is very important. The more that you can
show the aspects of your character, the more that you will be able to get the people's approval. I think, that I have reached
my audiences, and this is due to them noticing that I am the type of person that doesn't admit defeat -- that always has a
die-hard attitude. This is another reason why Tag Hauer has chosen me [to be their spokesperson].

Purple Butterfly Cannes Festival
Invitation
October 13, 2002
|
As was reported earlier, Purple Butterfly was invited to participate in the
2003 Cannes Film Festival. In addition to what
was previously reported, according to the film's production company manager, Zhong Zheng, director
Lou Ye received a 2 year ban from filming in China
because he presented his last internationally acclaimed film,
Suzhou River, at the Tokyo Film Festival
without approval. However, this will not affect Purple Butterfly's Cannes presentation in
March and its general release, currently scheduled for May.
Zhong Zheng says that Purple Butterfly's style is much like that of Suzhou River,
and it's really not a love story, per se, but rather about human life, people and their relationships.
As for Ziyi, Zhong commented that she "has taken a new step," as it relates to her acting abilities. Though
it did go over budget, he is confident that Purple Butterfly will make back it's money in
the domestic box office alone.
