Ang Lee To Direct Crouching Tiger Prequel
September 13, 2002
|
According to a recent article in The China Post,
which covers director Ang Lee's schooling
in Taiwan and
directorial education and experience, Ang Lee will most certainly direct the
Crouching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon prequel, Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin. In addition,
Jet Li, Ang Lee's first choice in the
original Academy Award winning production, may very well replace
Chow Yun-fat in the prequel as Li Mu Bai.
Excerpt from The China Post:
[Ang Lee's] next feature film, The Hulk, has been in the work in the Bay Area for about two months now,
but he declined to elaborate on it, citing a gag order on all production crew. By the time this
big-screen adaptation of a popular '70s TV series hits the theater next summer, Lee will have
begun shooting the prequel of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Jet Li, who turned down the leading
role the first time around and opted for gang-action flick Romeo Must Die, is still Lee's ideal
pick to play Lee Mubai in the prequel, hoping to recapture the sensational box office appeal of
the first one, the highest grossing foreign-language movie in U.S. history.

Update On The Road Home Pictures
September 13, 2002
|
As was reported in Very Early
The Road Home Pictures, the pictures posted of Zhang Ziyi and Zhang Yimou
at a very early
The Road Home function in China, were reasoned correctly not to be from the
Hundred Flowers and the Golden Rooster Awards, held in the city of Nanning in the South China
on Tuesday, Nov 21, 2000. But instead are from a special The Road Home screening for
students in Beijing
on September 24, 1999.
The first is of Ziyi
speaking to the audience of students.
The second is of Ziyi signing autographs for the students outside of the screening
hall. The third is a solo
picture of Ziyi on stage. The fourth
is of Zhang Yimou, director of The Road Home, and Ziyi on stage.
The fifth is of Zhang
Yimou, Ziyi, a Professor Di, his son and a presently unidentified woman.
Special screenings for The Road Home were held often in Beijing, and while Ziyi was also
filming Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon. Whenever not required to shoot a scene for Crouching Tiger, Ziyi
would join Zhang Yimou at such special screenings to help promote the film. The Road Home
was especially liked by the Chinese government because of the film's emphasis on education. They
would use these screenings of the film to promote school education, and still do.
Thanks to joy for the news update.

Very Early The Road Home Pictures
September 11, 2002
|
The following pictures are of Zhang Ziyi and Zhang Yimou at a very early The Road Home
award/recognition ceremony in China. The date on each of the pictures, September 24, 1999, discounts
this function as being the Hundred Flowers and the Golden Rooster Awards, which was held over a year
later on Tuesday, Nov 21, 2000:
While the event taking place in these photos and their dates is being confirmed for a future update
(please read Update), the
following is more information about the Hundred Flowers and the Golden Rooster Awards, Ziyi's
first known formal film award ceremony, held in the Great Hall of the Guangxi People in
Nanning,
the provencial capitol of the
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,
in Southern China:
The two awards, held together every year, are very different from one another. The Hundred Flowers
Awards, similar to the "People Choice Awards," was set up by the Popular Cinema magazine in
1962 and represents the opinion of the general film-going public. According to readers of the
magazine and voters on its internet site, the magazine had announced earlier in its November
issue that the Hundred Flowers award for best feature film had gone to
The Road Home,
directed by Zhang Yimou. The public also selected new-comer Zhang Ziyi as best actress.
The Golden Rooster Awards on the other hand, established in 1981, the Year of the Rooster, is
regarded as a high-level assessment of Chinese films by film experts. The 2000 awards panel had
16 members, all well-known names in the world of film, which also awarded Zhang Yimou best director
for The Road Home.

Ziyi's Visit To Tibet
September 3, 2002
|
According to new news reported by Sina.com,
Saturday Zhang Ziyi arrived in Lhasa, Tibet with her father, brother, Zinan, and personal assistant
to fulfill her desire to visit the province and to contribute to the Tibetan Project, a charity
fund for Tibet development. Unfortunately, considering this was Ziyi's first visit to the mountainous
province of Tibet, she initially suffered from altitude sickness and had to cancel her visit to
the famous Potala Palace in order to
recuperate in time for Sunday's round of formal activities.
At 11am on Sunday, Ziyi attended a ceremony for the donation of the 100,000 yuan (about US$12,000)
that she's collected within the past six months as charity ambassador for the Tibet Development
Fund. Ziyi's donation to the fund will be used to help assist over 40 impoverished students with
their studies by paying for their expenses. Like a kindly big sister, she chatted with the students
and encouraged them to continue with their studies. Later in the afternoon Ziyi visted a local
orphanage and offered the children presents.
